A hidden gem. Absolutely lovely.
Lovely ruined 14th / 15th century church and adjoining provosts house.Church contains ornate tomb of Princess Margaret; daughter of King Robert III of Scotland and wife of Archibald the 4th Earl of Douglas.Profile of sunken garden still visible to the rear. Building was once sketched by the artist Joseph Turner from across the river on his travels.Used to be well cared for, 20 or so years ago when you had to pay a warden to enter. Access is now free and unsupervised, so the building is regularly sprayed with grafitti and littered with broken glass and rubbish from local youths. Information panels in the church have been vandalised and removed with just the metal frames remaining. Metal railings to perimeter are disappearing panel by panel as the bolt fixings are corroding, panels are becoming loose and then being stolen for scrap, leaving very sharp rusty sections of metal protruding at head height. You can get a good view of the building and garden from the Motte or large hill within the grounds.Shameful that it is being neglected and abused.
Gorgeous lovely place 2 visit!!
